The Donghai Bridge starts from Luchao Port in Pudong New Area, Shanghai (formerly Nanhui District), connects with Hulu Expressway in the north, crosses the northern sea of Hangzhou Bay in the south, and reaches Xiaoyangshan Island in Shengsi County, Zhejiang. The 32.5-kilometer-long Donghai Bridge is an integral part of the Shanghai International Shipping Center Deep-Water Port Project, and is listed as the "No. 1 Project" by the Shanghai Municipal Government.
The Donghai Bridge Project is one of the 8,982 sea-crossing bridges in the true sense of the word. The total length of the Donghai Bridge is about 32.5 kilometers, of which the land section is about 3.7 kilometers, the sea section between the new embankment of Luchaogang and Big Turtle Island is about 25.3 kilometers, and the connection section between Big Turtle Island and Xiaoyangshan Island is about 3.5 kilometers. The bridge is designed according to the highway standard of two-way six-lane plus emergency parking belt, the bridge width is 31.5 meters, the design speed is 80 kilometers per hour, and the design load is calibrated according to the close arrangement of container heavy vehicles, which can resist 12 typhoons and seven-intensity earthquakes, and the design reference period is 100 years.
