The northern German city of Bremen has a long history, having been founded as early as the 8th century. In 1260 Bremen joined the Hanseatic League, and in the late Middle Ages it controlled the commercial routes along the North Sea and Baltic coasts with several important Hanseatic cities such as Hamburg and Lübeck. In 1646, Bremen became a free imperial city, not belonging to any county lord, under the direct jurisdiction of the kingdom, so Bremen was called "Free Hanseatic City Bremen".

Today, with a population of 660,000, Bremen is the state capital of the German state of Bremen, the second largest port city, the fifth largest industrial city and the center of the northwest. Bremen's dominant industries include food processing, aerospace, shipping and logistics, automobile manufacturing, trade, and new energy.
