At the beginning of 2020, the sudden new crown pneumonia epidemic impacted the supply chain of construction machinery enterprises. Jiang Qingbin, deputy general manager of Sany Heavy Industry Pumping Company, said that in April, with the recovery of domestic infrastructure investment, Sany's pump truck orders increased significantly, and it was urgent to purchase a large number of chassis, but foreign chassis needed to be ordered half a year in advance, and it was "impossible to buy" due to the impact of the epidemic.

At the critical moment, the chassis independently developed and produced by Sany Heavy Industry came in handy. The R&D personnel accelerated the verification of the chassis, and the 24-hour "non-stop shutdown" test run, and the special chassis factory under Sany increased its horsepower production. “The chassis delivery time was shortened to about 10 days, and the pump truck production capacity was fully released.Jiang Qingbin said that Sany's special chassis is not only "good-looking", but also intelligent, digital, and welcomed by customers.

Not only the chassis, but also many key components in the construction machinery industry have faced the problem of "stuck neck". After a long period of crawling in the market, Sany Heavy Industry has learned a "rule of survival"——Key components cannot be controlled by others, and we must adhere to the road of independent innovation and master key core technologies.

In a conspicuous position in the middle of Sany Heavy Industry's "No. 18 Plant", what is displayed is not a certificate or certificate, but a variety of key components independently developed by Sany - they are displayed to the outside world like the "baby" of the enterprise, attracting visitors to stop.

In recent years, Sany Heavy Industry has established more than 10 parts companies, with a cumulative investment of more than 7 billion yuan to carry out R&D and industrialization of key components. In the annual sales revenue, Sany Heavy Industry spends about 5% on technology research and development.

In the past, the high-strength steel required for the pump truck boom relied on imports, and Yi Xiaogang, the technological innovation leader of Sany Heavy Industry, led the R&D team to "tackle key problems". "When the first batch of steel plates was tested, it was 'twisted into a twist', and it couldn't be used at all." Yi Xiaogang said,After two years of tens of thousands of tests, the strength of the steel plate finally reached 1,800 megapascals, breaking through the bottleneck of high-strength steel.

Through independent innovation and collaborative innovation, Sany has successfully developed special chassis, engine, high-strength steel, controller, cylinder, pump, valve, motor and other key components. “We have now realized the independent and controllable whole industrial chain, and basically bid farewell to the 'stuck neck'.Jiang Qingbin told reporters.

Tasting the "sweetness" of independent innovation, Sany Heavy Industry continued to increase R&D investment. This year, the number of R&D personnel in the research institute of Sany Heavy Industry Pumping Company has increased from less than 100 a year ago to more than 250, of which about 80% are graduate students.

"If key components are too dependent on foreign countries, the industrial chain will be very fragile."
