Heavy equipment maker Sany once prided itself on creating enough physical force to push liquid concrete to the top of a 500-meter-high skyscraper. Today, however, its most advanced creations do not generate any physical force at all.

Somewhere on the "cloud", a "digital twin" is in operation that is exactly the same as the factory specifications, with data provided by hundreds of different sensors and cameras. Organized and interpreted by artificial intelligence, this system enables managers to improve efficiency, predict and analyze failures, and reduce costly downtime. That's one of the reasons why MIT Technology Review named Sany one of the world's "50 smartest companies" last year.

Sany Heavy Industry is by no means alone in Changsha. With leading clusters of building technology, autonomous vehicles, and new media, Changsha is now a hotspot for cutting-edge research, smart manufacturing, and services in central China.

Last year, the World Economic Forum awarded Sany Heavy Industry No. 18 the title of "Lighthouse Factory". This is the name given to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) model factories that use 5G, IoT, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and other technologies to achieve new levels of speed and automation.
