In 2024, China's new energy heavy truck industry will grow by leaps and bounds, and its sales will grow rapidly: the monthly sales volume in December will hit a record of 15,200 units, and the annual sales volume will reach 82,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 140%; The annual market penetration rate increased to 13.61%, and the monthly penetration rate was as high as 21.89% in December. In January this year, the off-season of the new energy heavy truck industry was not light, and the sales volume has increased significantly year-on-year for 24 consecutive months.

"Similar to the development path of new energy passenger vehicles, the new energy heavy truck industry has also ushered in a turning point and crossed a breakthrough point. In the next five years, the new energy heavy truck market will continue to grow at a high rate, and the penetration rate is expected to gradually increase to 50% or even higher. The new energy heavy truck industry is expected to continue its high growth

The reporter saw in the intelligent manufacturing workshop of Sany Heavy Truck that more than 200 robots were busy with workers, and more than 700 AGVs (automatic guided vehicles) were shuttling in an orderly manner; At the delivery site, the new energy heavy trucks waiting to be shipped are neatly arranged, and many of the heavy trucks with different paint colors will be sent overseas.

In 2022, Sany Heavy Truck will open the Zhilian Heavy Truck Industrial Park with an investment of more than 22 billion yuan, and the workshop has fully realized 5G communication, and the informatization efficiency has been improved by 10 times compared with traditional factories, and a truck can be rolled off the assembly line every 4 minutes under full load operation, making it one of the modern heavy truck factories with the highest degree of automation and the largest production capacity (300,000 units/year) in the world.

At present, new energy heavy trucks are mainly charging heavy trucks, with an actual mileage of 300 kilometers and below, and the main use scenarios are mines, steel mills, ports, intercity logistics, etc. With the introduction and popularization of new energy heavy trucks with longer cruising range, the industry is expected to usher in leapfrog development.


Market drives have become the dominant force

Xiang Wenbo, chairman of Sany Group, said that the transportation industry is one of the important industries for carbon emissions, and China is at the forefront of the world in low-carbon emission reduction and electrification of passenger vehicles, but the low-carbon of commercial vehicles is also worthy of attention. According to statistics, the number of commercial vehicles accounts for only 12% of the total number of cars, and its carbon emissions account for 55.4%.

"The new energy of heavy trucks is an inevitable choice to achieve the 'double carbon' goal." Luo Changguo believes that in terms of new energy, heavy trucks started a little late, and are still in the stage of "market + policy" driven, but the market drive has dominated.

"Compared with fuel heavy trucks, new energy heavy trucks reflect strong commercial advantages and alternative advantages, and the industry is vigorous." A person in the heavy truck industry said.

According to the data of the first commercial vehicle network, from September to December 2024, it is the highest sales volume in the history of the new energy heavy truck market in the past four months, with an average monthly sales of 10,300 units.

Luo Changguo believes that three factors continue to promote the high sales of new energy heavy trucks: first, the electrification of passenger cars is in the forefront, cultivating customer awareness and the integrity of the industrial chain; Second, the new energy heavy truck itself has shown a significant advantage in operating income, and its freight cost of about 1 yuan/km is compared with the freight cost of about 3 yuan/km of fuel heavy trucks, which has formed a "dimensionality reduction blow"; Third, the large-scale production of batteries and the reduction of costs have led to the continuous decline in the price of new energy heavy trucks, and the downstream acceptance has been further improved.


New forces and old brands compete in the same field

Just like the development path of new energy passenger vehicles, at present, the new energy heavy truck industry is also showing a situation of new forces and old brands competing in the same field. Beidou data shows that in 2024, Sany will have 11,779 heavy trucks, a year-on-year increase of 177.4%, and a market share of 17.6%.
