At the beginning of this year, 393 species of migratory birds were recorded in Hunan, accounting for 48.89% of the total number of migratory birds in the country, and it is a key area for migratory bird migration and protection.




Recently, the Hunan Provincial Forestry Bureau has preliminarily built an ecological perception system for large-scale forest-related projects to help protect migratory birds with scientific and technological means. So, what is the ecological perception system for large-scale forest-related projects? And how was it built? How to protect migratory birds with precision and science? Let's take a look.




At the Shenxianling Wind Farm in Ningxiang City, Changsha, 25 wind turbines are arranged in sequence on the Huangmao Ridge between 200 and 400 meters above sea level, with an annual power generation capacity of more than 100 million kWh. Entering the peak season of migratory birds, wind power plants have begun to flexibly adjust their power generation plans.

There are a large number of migratory birds, and we will also do a good job of slowing down and stopping the operation of the wind turbine to ensure the smooth migration of the entire migratory birds.


In Hunan, there are about 3,000 wind turbines like this, which can be found in six biodiversity reserves, including Dongting Lake, Hengshan and Nanling. In this regard, this year, the Hunan forestry department screened 293 large-scale forest-related, wind power, photovoltaic and other projects, integrated 27,000 high-definition cameras of iron towers arranged around the periphery, video monitoring of nature reserves and wetlands, and sky eyes such as Beidou, plus 55,000 forest rangers manual inspection, and the big data transmitted back initially built an ecological perception system for large-scale forest-related projects, realizing real-time dynamic monitoring of the impact of large-scale forest-related projects on biodiversity.




Li Shaoping, Director of Hunan Provincial Biodiversity Conservation Center: I know how much area this project has approved, and whether it has actually occupied more than the area after the approval, you can see that it has not exceeded. The core of this is the data on the destruction of ecological vegetation, which is very objective, and you can know how much vegetation has been destroyed by large-scale projects. Then use this number as the core data, and then assist in the formation of a grade of impact on animals, plants, microorganisms, ecological landscapes, and ecological benefits. The preliminary design was set in black, red, yellow and green.


The ecological perception system uses artificial intelligence technology to analyze and mine the backhaul data, focusing on the comprehensive scoring of animals, plants, microbial ecological landscapes and ecological benefits from the five aspects of large-scale forest-related projects. A score of 90 or more is rated green, followed by yellow and red. The forestry department will order the relevant enterprises to regreen and rectify, making up for the shortcomings of large-scale forest-related projects in terms of heavy approval, light management, heavy evaluation and light monitoring, and also ensuring the restoration and improvement of the ecological environment of migratory bird migration routes.




Li Shaoping, Director of Hunan Provincial Biodiversity Conservation Center: What we want to explore is how to achieve biodiversity conservation in new energy projects. At present, the wind power in Hunan has reached more than 17 million kilowatts, which on the one hand has made a great contribution to local economic and social development and tax revenue, and on the other hand, it has also brought us some challenges in ecological protection. If we ignore these challenges and don't monitor them, then they will be more and more damaging. In particular, the wind power project is located on the top of the high mountain, especially the relatively high altitude of the mountain, once damaged, the ecological vegetation formed by it for thousands of years is extremely precious, and once damaged, it is very difficult to repair.


In addition to the protection of the natural environment of migratory birds, the ecological perception system will also give timely warnings during the peak migration period. So far, 34 wind power companies have been instructed to slow down, limit speed, suspend operations, or paint equipment with warning colors and install warning lights during the migratory season to reduce interference.
